Lord Wandsworth Foundation receives one of the UK’s biggest bequests for school bursaries

Lord Wandsworth College have announced news of a £2.1m bequest to the Foundation from a former pupil,

The gift is a bequest in the will of Sternian Jessie Flower who passed away in 2011. Jessie attended Lord Wandsworth’s Girls’ School at Gosden House in Bramley in the 1930s. Both she and her sister were supported by the Foundation following the death of their father while they were still young.

The bequest brings the total given to the Foundation in the past five years to more than £3.3m.

The trustees of the Foundation will follow Mrs Flower’s wish to invest the sum into the William and Jessie Flower Fund and use the income to fund school fees for the 50 Foundationers who currently attend the College. The Foundationers have been selected not only in terms of ability but also because of their need to be in a boarding school environment having faced significant challenges in their home lives. Since the College first opened its doors in 1922, over 2,500 Foundationers have been supported by the charity.

“Mrs Flower’s bequest is a very significant gift for our Foundation,” commented Headmaster Fergus Livingstone. “Mrs Flower was not only grateful for her own education, but could see the value of a boarding school education for children in a similar situation in today’s environment. Her decision to support our charity in this way is a huge endorsement of the work that we continue to do here at LWC and will bring significant progress to our programme to refinance the Foundation as it enters its second century".

Congratulations to Peter Danson 978 (1959 Sutton) on becoming captain of the over 70s England Hockey team.  This is a great achievement and well deserved for Peter.  All that practice at LWC has eventually paid off!

5th and 6th formers took full advantage of supportive Sternians and parents on 30th April when they attended the Sternians and LWC Careers Fair in the Sutton Sports Hall. With representatives from large businesses, small partnerships and a number of inspirational individuals who had set up their own businesses, the Fair introduced pupils to careers in law, medicine, marketing, engineering as well as brewing and becoming a TV chef. Our sincere thanks to Sternians Holly Abbott (1999 Gosden), Bruce Buckland (2008 Summerfield), Patrick Drake (1997 Summerfield), Ian Ellis (1974 Hazelveare), Oli Guthrie (2000 Summerfield), Honor Hancock (1994 Gosden), Chris Huffam (1970 School), Adam Komrower (1994 Sutton), Harry Mann (2001 Summerfield), Matthew Middleditch (1990 Summerfield), David Neave (2007 School), Paul Richings (1990 School), Shaun Stevens (1990 School), Bob Stevenson (1966 Hazelveare), Richard Sullivan (1987 Sutton), Terry Williamson (1967 Sutton), Matthew Zasada (2000 Hazelveare), Andy Brown (1975 Sutton)

We regret to announce the death of former headmaster Neil Henderson on Friday 22nd March 2013.  Neil was headmaster at the College from 1968 until 1982.  His funeral took place on 9th April in Edinburgh.  The service was taken by former LWC Chaplain, Rev Robin Craig, and was attended by many Sternians and the Headmaster, Fergus Livingstone.

Fantastic Cotterill Cup concert sponsored by the Sternians' Association last night at LWC.
The competition took place over two days; 150 musicians performed, a record high for the Music Department. The first day started early in the morning with Intermediate Keyboard and finished early evening with the Ensembles class – over nine hours of music making! There were Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced classes held in all instrument groups throughout the day. There were some wonderful performances, and at times, you could hear a pin drop in the Music and Drama Centre. The winners from each group performed in the Prize Winners’ Concert in the evening to compete for the prizes. Thirteen then competed for the Cup which was adjudicated by Brian Cotterill (1985 Summerfield).  Congratulations to Keira Brown who won for her slick and classy performance on drums and her engaging, confident performance of one of her own songs.

Our Thanksgiving Service for the Foundation was a wonderful occasion in Long Sutton Church on 3rd March.  Well attended by current pupils, parents, staff and Sternians, we were treated to former staff and pupils' memories.  Current 6th former Beth Harris read from Iris Faulkner's memories of her childhood and life at Gosden House.  Sternian Ron Burlingham (630 1950 Sutton) then read an extract from a letter from Browno about what a privilege it had been to look after the boys for so long.  Our thanks to Chairman Chris Huffam and all those who came.

Congratulations to Farnham Rugby Club's 1st XV on their record win against Croydon (134-10) on 17th Feb.  Many of the team (and club members) are Sternians, including captain Toby Comley (2006 Summerfield), Chris Penn (2006 Hazelveare), Chas Penn (2007 Hazelveare and Ben Rubio (2008 Summerfield)

This year, prompted by rising postage costs, we are proposing to make changes to the way we send information to you. These are our plans:

The Link will become an electronic newsletter sent by email to all Sternians and LWC’s supporters. We aim to send it more frequently than twice a year so that the news that you receive from us will be more up to date.

The Sower will become a termly publication, published three times a year and handed out to current and prospective pupils; we will post it to Sternians who request it.

The Sternian Magazine will continue to be printed and posted annually to all former pupils and staff.

To help us put these changes in place and keep our records up to date, please send your email address to: development@lordwandsworth.org or update us through facebook or LinkedIn or even on twitter. Please indicate if you would like to opt out of mailings but are happy for us to keep your email address on file.

Sternians retain hockey trophies - a lovely bright sunny day but freezing cold saw the Sternians take on the LWC first teams.  Lovely fast flowing hockey and two very well matched girls' teams saw the final score go to 4 all.  This was only the second match for the LWC boys' 1st XI and they could not quite match the more experienced Sternian team which led to a 3-1 for the Sternians.  Ladies  back row, left to right: Peter Danson, Mr Hicks, Alexa Kearns (2005 Park), Philippa East (2005 Gosden), Jessye Mann (2012 Gosden), Amy Howells (2010 Park), Verity Phillips (2010 Gosden), Ellie Mann (2012 Gosden)
Second row: GK Rachel Plummer (2011 Park) and Lottie Bates (2011 Gosden).  Front row: seated Katie Hopkins (2013 Gosden). Hetty Abbott (2009 Park) played valiantly but had to rush off to get warm!

Men’s back row, left to right: Andrew House (2011 Sutton), Will O’Meara (2012 School), Nick Scott (2012 Hazelveare), Oli Tresise (2012 Hazelveare), Alex Richards (2009 Sutton), Toby Ward (2012 Summerfield), Tom Hargreaves (2004 Hazelveare), Max Wright (current pupil who kindly stood in as GK), Peter Danson
Front row:  James Brewin (2009 Sutton), Jamie Dunkley (2009 Sutton), George MacCrossan (2012 School), Brandon Ambrose-Brunskill (2012 Hazelveare)

The Sternian Careers Fair - Life after LWC – what did you do?

Following on the success of our previous careers fairs staffed by Sternians, we are holding another event next year on Tuesday 30th April 2013 at LWC.  We welcome Sternians from all walks of life willing and able to give up a couple of hours of their time to talk to 5th formers, who are in the second year of their GCSE courses, and the 6th form.  The format is very informal with the pupils able to wander around the hall to talk to you rather than sitting in an audience to be talked at.  Any promotional material or handouts are a good idea as they guarantee attention!

The fair will be held in the Sutton Sports Hall so there is plenty of room to spread out and wander around, and academic staff will also be in attendance.  Lunch is provided beforehand and the timing for the careers event is 1.30 to 3.15pm.  If you are able to attend or would like more information, please contact Gill Kelly

*REUNION DATE - The Sternian Summer Reunion at Lord Wandsworth College next year will be on Saturday 15th June 2013*

Long Sutton Church, dear to many Sternians, is trying to raise funds for restoration.  Contact Colin Cohen at colin.cohen@btinternet.com or 01256 862214 for details

Sternians welcome former parents as Associate Members
The Sternians Association has taken the innovative step of inviting all former parents to join as Associate Members of the Association. The motion was passed at the AGM and recent former parents will start receiving information electronically so there will be no expense for the Association. Other parents are welcome to join and need only contact the Sternians Office.

The commitment of parents can be as long as ten years or even more if they have several children at the College. It seemed logical to enable that involvement with the Lord Wandsworth College community to continue. Friendships with staff, pupils and other parents are forged at concerts, plays and on the often bitterly cold Long Sutton touchline. We look forward to seeing them at Sternian functions.
